BAT’s daytime script club – October 18 at Merrill Gardens – Burien @ Merrill Gardens Burien
Oct 18 @ 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm

BAT’s daytime script club will be reading Tribes by Nina Raine at its October 18, 2018, meeting. If you do not have the script, please email [email protected] and make arrangements for a script.

Have you heard? Are you listening to me? What did you just say?

Most of us ask variations on those questions at least a dozen times a day. But it’s unlikely that they vibrate with the resonance they acquire in Nina Raine’s Tribes, a smart, lively and beautifully play that asks us to hear how we hear, in silence as well as in speech.

Billy was born deaf into a hearing family. He was raised inside its fiercely idiosyncratic and politically incorrect cocoon. He has adapted brilliantly to his family’s unconventional ways, but they’ve never bothered to return the favor. It’s not until he meets Sylvia, a young woman on the brink of deafness, that he finally understands what it means to be understood.

Tribes was nominated for both the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for best play in 2013.

Dr. Frankenstein – by Selma Dimitrijevic @ Burien Actors Theatre
Oct 19 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

This is not your father’s Frankenstein. In this startlingly fresh, lyrical and haunting contemporary adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel, Dr. Frankenstein is reimagined as a woman. Victoria Frankenstein and her articulate Creature tell a thought-provoking story that follows Mary Shelley’s book more closely than other productions, but with wonderful new twists and an exploration of what happens when we don’t try to understand “the other”—and what happens when we do. A Northwest premiere.

BAT evening script club – November 1 @ Burien Library
Nov 1 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

BAT’s daytime script club will be reading Handle With Care by Jason Odell Williams at its November 15, 2018, meeting. If you need a script, please email [email protected] to make arrangements for a script.

This yuletide romantic comedy examines random ways people and things can get lost, even in our GPS-obsessed world. It is a surprisingly witty and touching comedy.

Jason Odell Williams’ play pings back and forth between the traditions of an Israeli tourist and an American college professor who grew up celebrating Easter, but also the occasional Shabbat. Both are licking their wounds in the face of loss.

Ayelet, a young Israeli woman with little command of English, reluctantly travels with her grandmother to America. Circumstances both hilarious and sad bring Ayelet together with Josh, a young man who has little command of romance. Is their attraction an accident, or destiny generations in the making?
