BAT Script Club – September @ Merrill Gardens - Burien
Sep 20 @ 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm

The club will be discussing Dr. Frankenstein by Selma Dimitrijevic. Because there is no August meeting of the script club the Dr. Frankenstein script will be made available at the July meeting. If you missed that and want a copy of the script please email [email protected] and make arrangments for a script.

The year is 1831: debarred from attending university in England, Dr. Victoria Frankenstein (yes, you read that right) travels to Ingolstadt, where women are permitted to study medicine and there seems to be a ready supply of disinterred cadavers, no questions asked.

Mary Shelley’s novel has been so often adapted, filmed and parodied there can’t be many interpretative avenues left to explore. But Selma Dimitrijevic’s new version is, to my knowledge, the first to change the gender of the central character. In certain respects, it seems an obvious intervention, given that the novel had a female creator. But it profoundly alters the trajectory of a book in which women are relegated to submissive, supporting roles.
