"Ben Butler" by Richard Strand, a comedy-historical drama butler web smaller

Sept. 29, 2017, through Oct. 22, 2017

Friday, Saturday at 8 pm, and Sunday matinees at 2 pm

Two quick-witted men, one black and one white, and their innate stubbornness radically change the course of U.S. history and the purpose of the North’s cause. This look at a key decision in the Civil War is part comedy, part historical drama and part biography, often all at once, and sometimes none of those. A simultaneously thought-provoking and side-splitting story of equality and the politics of race in America. Northwest premiere.

In this delightfully irreverent musical take on the Dickens classic, Ebenezer Scrooge has been recast as an embittered woman named Evelyn and moved to 1911 New York City. (**Some adult language that includes "F, B, and A" words, plus mature content and frank discussions of sex and sexuality.  BAT's policy is to inform audiences of content but to let parents, guardians and teachers make decisions that they feel appropriate for the youth and teens in their care.**)

An intensely smart and immensely funny comedy about life, love, and the grass being greener on the other side of the fence. Catherine wants what her friend Gwen has: a husband and children. Gwen wants to be what Catherine is: a famous academic and cultural pundit. Toss in Catherine’s feisty mother, Gwen’s flawed husband, feminist theory, a young former stripper named Avery, Dr. Phil and lots of martinis for a bumpy and hilarious ride. A Pulitzer Prize finalist.

"The nonprofit Burien Actors Theatre, which promises unusual productions and invigorating experiences, was successful on all counts with Rapture, Blister, Burn. This is a play that is intellectually stimulating, without being heavy-handed. It’s funny, and it’s poignant. And ends with a powerful message." Westside Seattle

"Rapture, Blister, Burn is well worth the push off of the warm couch to bask in the glow of BAT’s stage lights and the presence of this amazing cast." B-Town Blog

"And whether, or not, you agree with the author’s point of view, the journey, the drama, and emotional and psychological process which takes the characters to the conclusion is well worth the time taken to see the play. In a time where there is so much division, and so much shared tragedy, this play addresses those concerns and is also very entertaining. -- B-Town Blog, full revie HERE

"Church and State is as intelligent as it is funny and tragic. It is thought-provking and only takes itself serious enough to make a point. I highly recommend it. -- Burien Culture Hub, full review HERE
