Audition for “Coney Island Christmas”

Auditions for comedy “Coney Island Christmas” with Burien Actors Theatre

Burien Actors Theatre, as Burien Little Theatre will soon be known, announces auditions for the Pacific Northwest premiere of the comedy “Coney Island Christmas,” written by Donald Margulies, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Dinner with Friends. (Burien Little Theatre is changing its name to Burien Actors Theatre to  more accurately reflect the quality of the work onstage and that the company is not a children’s theater.)

“Coney Island Christmas” utilizes an ensemble cast of characters ranging in age from 12 to 90—actors do not have to be those ages but most be able to convincingly play them.  Most of the child characters will be played by adults. All parts are open and available and all actors are encouraged to audition.

Synopsis:  Pulitzer Prize-winner Donald Margulies weaves together nostalgia, music and merriment about Shirley Abramowitz, a young Jewish girl who, much to her immigrant parents’ exasperation, is cast as Jesus in the school’s Christmas pageant. Will differences of religion and family politics bring the curtain down? The now great grandmother Shirley Abramowitz takes her young granddaughter Clara back in time to Shirley’s 1930s childhood in New York. Two of the most endearingly inept holiday school pageants ever and a universal tale of what it means to be an American of any faith at the holidays. Coney Island Christmas was commissioned by Geffen Theatre founder Gil Cates and premiered at the Geffen last winter.

Performances are at Burien Actors Theatre from Nov. 29-Dec. 22, 2013. Rehearsals begin in mid-October. $100 stipend provided. Directed by Rochelle Flynn and Maggie Larrick.
