BAT Script Club – June @ Merrill Gardens - Burien
Jun 20 @ 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm

At the June meeting of the BAT Script Club, the Club will be discussing American Son by Christopher Demos-Brown.

Dramatically, American Son is strong in its depiction of parental angst, especially the all-consuming fear that comes with being mother to a black child in a country that constantly makes them a target.

American Son is not a subtle play; it barely feels like a play at all. With its unrelentingly high tension on every level — maternal, marital, societal — it’s more like a slice of a nightmare, with few contours despite its surprises. Its abrupt ending doesn’t even offer a chance for catharsis; it just spits you out.

Hope to see you at BAT’s Script Club.

The Importance of Being Earnest – Burien @ The Importance of Being Earnest
Aug 2 @ 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm

In a beautiful adaptation of The Importance of Being Earnest, set in 1985 with all the big hair and Valley Girl charm that goes with that, BAT will make you laugh out loud.

Oscar Wilde’s farce follows the story of two men who use fictitious personas to escape from the social standards of the Valley Girl era. The show is full of dramatic, romantic proposals that are only thwarted by the women’s’ claim that they must marry a man named Ernest!

The BAT script club will be reading “American Son,” by Christopher Demos-Brown

Offering a reverse angle on the standard procedural, “American Son” takes place entirely in the waiting room of a South Florida police station, where in the middle of a stormy night Kendra and her estranged husband, Scott, await news of their missing 18-year-old son, Jamal.
